The 15 Puzzle (also called the Gem Puzzle, Boss Puzzle, or Mystic Square) was invented in the 1870s by Noyes Palmer Chapman, a postmaster in Canastota, New York. The puzzle became a worldwide craze in 1880, with newspapers reporting that "the 15 Puzzle is to-day the great sensation in the toy shops of this city." The puzzle's popularity has endured for over a century, making it one of the most recognizable sliding puzzles in history.
